Urgent help Pleeease iPhone 3G

Hi,
I bought this iPhone 3G which I was told was legally unlocked, it wasn't and it was working fine until I downloaded an app and it froze. I went to restore the phone with iTunes and now am getting the whole garb about the sim card not being supported. The phone is giving me 'Emergency calls only'.
Please can anyone help as to what to do? This is a real emergency for me because I spent a small fortune on this bloody thing! Thanks in advance for any help...
