Default iPhone 3G Soft Unlock Procedure

It's very simple. All you've to do is install a small daemon tool and you'll be on your way to start using any SIM card you want.

You can install the application through both Cydia and Installer. Here we've outlined how to install the daemon application using Cydia as this is the most used application on Jailbroken iPhone. Here's what you need to do:

  1. Go to Cydia from your iPhone
  2. Then go to "Manage" from the bottom menu navigation
  3. Select or tap on "Sources" under the Manage section
  4. Once you're on the Sources section, click on "Edit" on the top right hand side of the screen
  5. Then you'll see the "Add" button will show up on the top left hand side of the screen
  6. Click on "Add" and enter the unlock software URL (Please get the URL from the Dev team's blog as Dev team isn't allowing anyone to publish the application URL. The application url can be found at the bottom of this post on Dev team's blog)
  7. Now put the URL on the popup box and hit "Add Source" and the Yellowsn0w software source will be added on the sources list
  8. Tap on that Source now and you'll be taken to the next screen
  9. Select the Yellowsn0w application now
  10. On the next page you'll see the install button on the top right hand side of the screen
  11. Tap on the Install button and confirm the installation
  12. Once the application is installed, go back to Cydia
  13. Now restart your iPhone by holding down both the power and home button for few seconds and leave both the buttons when you see the Apple logo
  14. Wait for your iPhone to be restarted completely
  15. Once restarted, wait for 10-15 seconds for your iPhone to show the new phone network
  16. That's it!! You've an unlocked iPhone 3G and a lot of freedom
  17. Enjoy!!
Please share your thought and experience with us here.

Default it didn't work

hi there! I got an Iphone 3g and tried this procedure. The procedure completed successfully but when I tried to put a different sim card it doesn't work. I got a 1 bar signal on top but can't make any call or send messages. When I put my original sim the phone works. So basically it didn't unlock my phone. What did I do wrong? please advise. Thank you!

I don't think you did anything wrong. Just do the following after installing yellowsn0w:
  • Install Boss Prefs from Cydia
  • Turn everything off on Boss Prefs and then restart your iPhone from Boss Prefs (click on the power at the bottom and then click reboot)
Your third party SIM should work after doing this.

Default still no go

hi there! thank you for your prompt reply.

however, i installed bosspref, turned off everything in bosspref and rebooted. After reboot i still got the 1 bar on top.

and when i go to airplane mode then turn it on and off. I get the SIM Failure message.

So i end up using my original sim. I followed everything you've said so I dont know what else to do, maybe optus got a pretty good lock on this phone.

What firmware are you using? 2.2 or 2.2.1?

may be that's why. as far as I know, yellowsn0w doesn't support 2.2.1 as yet.
