Default Jailbreaking/Unlocking iPhone Firmware 2.2

Here's the step-by-step procedure to Unlock iPhone 2G and Jailbreak iPhone 3G with Firmware 2.2. Please follow the steps carefully and you won't have any problem. Reply to this thread if you face any trouble and we'll try to help you.

  1. Download iTunes 8 and upgrade if you haven’t already.
  2. Download the PwnageTool from here.
  3. Download the Restored IPSW for 3G Firmware or 2G Firmware.
  4. Make sure both PwnageTool and Restored IPSW is in the same location
  5. Run the PwnageTool.app click on Expert Mode from the top menu
  6. Then select your iPhone type and click the next arrow at the bottom right
  7. The PwnageTool will find the Restored IPSW
  8. Select it and click the next arrow at the bottom right
  9. On the next page, select “General” and click the next arrow at the bottom right
  10. Untick “Activate the Phone” and leave the rest as it is and click the next arrow at the bottom right
  11. Keep clicking next until you see two images
  12. Once you see the images, untick both of them - Boot Logo & Recovery Logo and click the next arrow
  13. This will bring you back to the home screen
  14. Select “Build” and click next arrow
  15. This will ask you to select a location to create the Custom Restore IPSW file (iPhone1,2_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw)
  16. Save it on the same location (you can save this file anywhere you want)
  17. This will take a few minutes to create the Custom IPSW file
  18. Once created please follow the instruction on the screen to put your iPhone on DFU Mode
  19. Once the iPhone is on DFU mode, iTune will automatically open up and will be ready to restore your iPhone
  20. Press alt/option and click on restore at the same time to select the custom IPSW you’ve just created
  21. And you’re done
  22. And finally Sync with your iTune to get all your data from the backup

There seems to be a bit of an issue with the "late 2008 macbook" and with the DFU mode. so try using another machine and you should be able to put it in DFU mode successfully.

Have you unzipped it properly and then tried to run the PWNAGE Tool? This problem sounds very strange to me.

Default ZiPhone/Pwnage/Quickpwn/Mac/iPhone 2G

11/30/08 My 4GB 2G iPhone was on FW 1.1.4. (I don't remember how I got it there.) I used ZiPhone 3.0 and it worked like a charm with my T-Mobile. Please I don't want to get into who did what and stole from who. It worked in 5 minuets and I was happy. I've updated my iTunes to 8.0.2 and am on OS X 10.5.5 on an Intel Mac Pro and using Safari 3.2. I want to say my Bootloader is 3.9 (not sure, but when I use BootNeuter 2.1 the 3.9 box is blue). For what ever reason, I decided to upgrade to iPhone firmware 2.2 and try Quickpwn. I downloaded Quickpwn 2.2. It Jailbreak(ed) my phone. I went to Cydia and downloaded BootNeuter 2.1. It hangs or freezes. I restarted the phone and tried again. I can't recall if the sliders ever worked as I've been trying to fix my iPhone for 15 hours now. I may have messed up by quitting while this was running but it's all one big blur in my memory. I tried to down grade to 1.1.4 on iTunes 7.5 (on a Powerbook and a iMac). Before iTunes stopped recognizing my iPhone all together, it was getting a 1604 error. I restored the iPhone to 2.2 on the Mac Pro and reran QuickPwn 2.2. After the second attempt it was back to a Jailbreak state. I tried downloading BootNeuter 2.2 again from Cydia, I've tried with the Sim card, without the card, and dancing in front of a naked goat while chanting the words to It's not easy being green. My Wifi works, I haven't tried Bluetooth because I don't care at this point. I want my iPhone to work as a phone and should have left it alone in the 1st place but I didn't. BootNeuter 2.2 acts like this when clicked:
"Please wait. Determining your settings", 3.9 turns blue, It'll hang for about 5 minutes and then the phone blinks and I get the Apple logo for a few minutes and then it's back at the slide to unlock screen. The Bootneuter screen more often than not appears darkish with the middle brighter than the surrounding areas like a flash light is shinning behind the iPhone. After the message about Please wait, Determining your settings goes away, I cannot slide any of the buttons for Neuter, FakeBlank or Unlock, or hit the FALSH button. I've deleted the app and reinstalled it. Can anyone advise me on how to get my iPhone to work with T-Mobile again?

I am now about to try the PwnageTool 2.2.1 method. I am not beyond changing my religion during the process to get my iPhone back, as the goat thing seemed to help me get the iPhone to act like an iPod Touch at the very least. Please ask if you feel I have left out any important details.

Default PwnageTool: Sim not supported

I now get a message on iTunes that says Sim not supported. Although it appears the phone will only work in emergency mode, I was able to make and get a phone call but am unable to access any of the icons. All I get is the picture of a USB cable stretching to the iTunes icon. I tried to restore with the custom ispw but kept getting error 1600 (1604 eventually). I think this was a mistake on my part. I tried holding the top and home button and was able to get the logo. I was able to make it through the restore with the option key and the custom ispw. The phone has the usb cable/iTunes logo, says T-mobile and there is an icon of a lock. It appears to be in emergency use mode but can make/receive regular phone calls.

This really sucks.

Tried Quickpwn again. Got error 1621.

OMG!!! I ignored the error and let it keep running (Fu*king pineapples). I have a regular screen with all the app icons, a message asking me if I want to change the desktop and The T-Mobile logo and signal bars. iTunes is asking me if I want to restore from a back up or set up as a new phone. I'm going to restore from a back up. Lets see if I actually got my iPhone back in all it's former glory and improved!!! Does anybody need a slightly used goat? FYI, I've switched USB ports and USB cables in this process. I think the cable switch helped something somewhere along the line.

Phone and WiFI appear to be intact. Thank the Lord. My recomendation is you do the upgrade in this order:

Do the iPhone 2.2 upgrade on iTunes, Download PwnageTool 2.2.1 and QuickPwn 2.2. Create a folder and put these two crappy apps in them. Follow the 22 step directions Xclusive has posted at the top of this forum for the PwnageTool, then use QuickPwn and follow it's directions and borrow heavily from my chronicles. BTW: no matter how many times I used QuickPwn and had several iPhone1,1_2.2_5G77_Restore.ipsw files on my computer, QuickPwn never found it and ALWAYS downloaded the file all over again. GRRRRRRR!!!!

After all is said and done and working, if you restart the iPhone, you'll get a no service message where the carrier logo should be. After a few moments the T-Mobile logo and signal bars appear. Go to Settings and and select carrier->T-mobile. This should stop the no service message. I never noticed the carrier option before. Could that be why my iPhone wasn't working all along? I say no because the T-Mobile carrier was eventually automatically activated after about 15 seconds or so.

My best advice to you all is DON'T PANIC! Take your time, read the forums, be creative and don't give up. You to can spend almost 24 hours non stop using Dev Team and Dev Team related software to hack your iPhone. Ooooor you can spend 5 minutes with ZiPhone 3.0 and stay on Firmware 1.1.4. Use the other 23 hours and 55 minutes doing something more constructive!!! Now, can anyone tell me how to get rid of this fuc*ing pineapple logo?

Hi voiceofreason, sounds like you've gone through a bit of hassle . But I am glad that you've finally got it working. It may sound a bit strange to you but it worked first time for me.

Anyway, to get rid of Pineaple you've to un-tick the pineable logo while creating the custom IPSW file, which would be another hassle for you as you've to do the whole jailbroken process again. So unless it's really really bothering you, you can keep it.
